Navistar International Corp. is recalling some 73-inch sleeper cab models from 2016 to 2020 because the rear exhaust hanger brackets could crack, allowing the tailpipe to detach and fall onto the roadway, where it could cause a crash if struck by another vehicle.

Navistar told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of eight cases of tailpipes detaching among 216 reports of cracked exhaust hangers on 2016-2020 International LT and 2017-2018 Prostar models. No injuries or accidents were reported.

Trucks with a horizontal after-treatment device and horizontal tail pipe mounted on the right side were recalled. Navistar said all the trucks could have the condition, which resulted from the brackets being made with insufficient material strength to last the life of the vehicle.

During a pretrip inspection, a driver may notice a cracked rear exhaust pipe hanger and the exhaust tailpipe dropped out of position.

Dealers will replace for free the rear exhaust hanger bracket with one of a more robust design that Navistar began using in production in February. Dealers also will replace any forward brackets found to be cracked and any exhaust tailpipes found to be damaged. Customers and dealers will be notified on April 23.
